Mrs. Clardy’s 5th grade is reading the book Hatchet. Brian, a character in the book, had to build a fire to signal the rescue plane!
Building a campfire can be a simple and enjoyable process. Here are three easy steps to get you started:
1. Gather Materials: Collect three types of fuel: tinder (small, dry materials like leaves, grass, or paper), kindling (slightly larger sticks or branches), and firewood (larger logs). Ensure you have enough to sustain the fire for your intended duration.
2. Build the Fire Structure: Create a fire structure using your materials. A common method is the teepee style: Place a small bundle of tinder in the center, then arrange kindling around it in a teepee shape, leaving space for airflow. Finally, add larger logs around the kindling, also in a teepee or log cabin style.
3. Light the Fire: Ignite the tinder using matches or a lighter. Once the tinder catches fire, it will ignite the kindling, which will then catch the firewood. Add more wood as needed to keep the fire going, ensuring there's enough airflow for a steady burn.
Always remember to follow safety guidelines and check local regulations regarding campfires.
