Can you spell “A Cool Kid?” Jordan Mckinney represented #RJMS at the Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Competition in Oklahoma City this past weekend. First, Jordan competed with other students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade for the "School" round of the Bee. Mr. Boothe said "I don't recall how many rounds this portion endured, but after over an hour of taking turns spelling words, Jordan came out on top!" Next, he relentlessly practiced his spelling word list with anybody who would listen, mostly Mr. Bothe and Mrs. Nalley. This was to prepare for the "Qualifying Exam," which was an online test. "I believe he only missed two words on this section and that solidified his spot in the next round." Bothe said. On Saturday, Jordan competed in the "Regional" round (the next step is the National Bee in D.C.). Jordan fought his way through, against tough competition, all the way to the 4th round. Unfortunately, it was the word "adolescence" that tripped him up. Mr. Bothe said "However, and I find this truly admirable, Jordan demonstrated an unwavering positive attitude. Even in defeat, he congratulated his fellow spellers and spoke about himself with immense confidence."

⚾️Savage Varsity Baseball (4-0) is off to a red hot start to the 2026 season. In the opening week, they outscored their opponents 52-3 and captured a pair of important district wins in the process. This week, they will look to extend that hot streak with four more games on the schedule. They begin the week on the road to Eufaula on Monday for an important district contest against the Ironheads. Eufaula makes the trip to Broken Bow on Tuesday for another district game. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM both days. The Savages end the week with a couple of non-district home games against a pair of Arkansas teams. On Thursday, the Dierks Outlaws are in town, and on Friday it's the De Queen Leopards. Those games are each scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM. We hope you can make it out to the ball park to support this team, Savage fans! It's going to be a great week! #GoSavages!

🏀The Broken Bow Lady Savages (26-4) punched their ticket to the 2026 Class 4A Girls Basketball State Championship Tournament with a decisive win over Fort Gibson Saturday night and their road to the state title is now mapped. It's an eight-team single-elimination tournament and the field is stacked with quality teams. 🎟️First up: OKC Douglass (17-8), Tuesday, March 10 at 1:30 PM at OG&E Coliseum in Oklahoma City. Coach Latesha Woods’ Trojans are no joke — they went to the 4A state championship game just last year, losing a 39-36 heartbreaker to Lincoln Christian. This is their third consecutive trip to the big dance having also advanced to the state semifinals in 2024. But here’s the thing — Broken Bow has been battle-tested all season. Coach Toby Bean’s squad has faced highly-ranked opponents and tournament pressure all year long and possess the athleticism and big game experience to compete against any of the teams in this year's field. This marks the fifth state tournament appearance for Broken Bow in the 5-on-5 era of girls basketball, and their first since appearing in three straight tournaments in 2016-2018. Tuesday's quarterfinal winner advances to the state semifinal round on Thursday at 8:00 PM in Yukon — with the State Championship game scheduled for Friday at 7:45 PM at OG&E Coliseum. Let’s GO Ladies!!! 🏀It's Game Day and our Lady Savages are one win away from a berth in the Class 4A Girls State Championship Tournament! Following last night's disappointing overtime loss to Harrah in the area finals, Broken Bow makes a return trip to Seminole today for a rematch with the Ft Gibson Lady Tigers in tonight's area consolation finals. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM. The Lady Savages used a smothering defense to defeat Ft Gibson 62-40 in Muldrow last Saturday night to capture the regional championship. They hope to repeat that performance tonight and advance into next week's state tournament in OKC. Due to location restraints, tonight's game will only be live streamed by Ft Gibson. 6 BENEFITS OF READING 1. Reading boosts intelligence. Reading, especially starting at a young age, expands your knowledge horizons. In fact, children’s books expose kids to 50% more words than television does. 2. Reading improves your brain power. Just like hitting the gym exercises your muscles, reading exercises your brain. Reading frequently helps slow down the memory-decline process as you age and helps keep your mind sharp. Avid readers can also be up to 2.5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who participate in less brain-stimulating activities. 3. Reading can also enhance your short-term memory. Think about all the information you take in when you read a book. You’re learning new characters’ names, plot lines and words with every turn of a page. The more you read, the better your brain gets at storing fresh information. So keep on reading, and you’ll be able to stop flipping back to old pages. 4. Reading can help with depression and stress. A study of depressed patients in a mental ward showed a positive improvement in patients when they read aloud. They reported feeling better with a more positive outlook. Self-help books are best for those with more severe cases of depression, as books are a low-intensity form of intervention. Reading has also been found to reduce stress by nearly 68%, according to researchers. 5. Reading can make you more empathetic. Fiction novels, in particular, help readers understand other people’s emotions. By relating to characters in a book, many people can translate that empathy to those they interact with in their daily lives. 6. Reading before bed can help you fall asleep. A nighttime ritual, like reading, can signal to your body that it’s time to sleep. However, if you’re going to start this routine, make sure you’re reading physical books. Screens on devices like e-readers and tablets will keep you awake longer and can give you a worse night’s sleep. Reading is beneficial in so many ways. It’s great for both your mental and physical health, and is a great way to spend your time. If you’re looking for a new hobby, try your hand at being a bookworm, and you’ll feel better in more ways than one.
