Broken Bow Schools Introduces New Special Education Curriculum to Foster Student Success

Broken Bow, OK [September 12, 2025] — In an exciting step forward for elementary special education in Broken Bow, the school district is launching a dynamic new curriculum designed to enhance student learning and build lifelong skills. This innovative curriculum integrates a blend of research-based tools and strategies to support the diverse needs of students and help them achieve their full potential in both math and literacy.

New Math Intervention Program: Kickstart: Number Sense

Kickstart: Number Sense is a small-group math intervention program aimed at helping students develop a flexible, intuitive understanding of numbers. By fostering strong number sense, students are empowered to visualize numbers, perform mental math, and master basic operations with confidence and speed. The program encourages students to approach math from different perspectives, helping them relate numbers to real-life situations and solve problems effectively.

"At Broken Bow, we understand that strong foundational skills in mathematics are key to student success," said Shonda George, Special Education Instructor at Dierks Elementary School. "Kickstart: Number Sense is a great tool to ensure students not only master the basics but also develop a deep understanding of math that they can apply to everyday situations and build upon year after year."

Building Fact Fluency Toolkits

To further support math learning, the district is also introducing Building Fact Fluency toolkits in Addition & Subtraction, and Multiplication & Division. These toolkits are designed to help students simultaneously build a conceptual understanding of mathematical operations and develop fluency in basic math facts. Each toolkit invites students to think strategically through a variety of engaging, real-world contexts.

Superkids Foundational Skills Kit for Literacy

On the literacy front, Broken Bow Schools is excited to roll out the Superkids Foundational Skills Kit, which provides systematic, explicit instruction in reading and writing. Designed to build key skills like phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary, the kit ensures students have a solid grasp of print concepts and writing mechanics.

"Reading and writing are foundational to every aspect of a student's education," said Mrs. George. "The Superkids kit provides a structured yet engaging approach that ensures students are not only learning to read and write but are building the necessary skills to become confident communicators."

Tools for Teachers and Students

These programs are developed by Zaner-Bloser, a leader in educational resources that creates tools to help students become joyful and creative learners. Zaner-Bloser’s philosophy aligns closely with the district’s goals of providing a supportive, inspiring learning environment where students experience “aha” moments of discovery, accomplishment, and pride.

“We are excited to partner with Zaner-Bloser to bring high-quality resources into the hands of our teachers,” said Carla Ellisor, Superintendent of Broken Bow Schools. “These tools will help our educators inspire students to reach new heights and celebrate their learning journeys.”

Looking Ahead

With the introduction of these specialized tools and curricula, Broken Bow Schools is taking significant strides to ensure that all students, regardless of their learning needs, receive the individualized support necessary for success. The district is committed to creating an inclusive, dynamic educational environment where every student can thrive. With a focus on innovation, inclusion, and academic excellence, the district strives to create an environment where every student is supported and encouraged to achieve their best.Dierks special ed
