2020-21 BBHS AP/Pre-AP Honors English Summer Reading

Traditionally, at BBHS, students enrolling in advanced English courses are assigned summer work.  This year, the process will work a bit differently.  Students should have already been contacted by the appropriate teacher about their summer responsibilities.  Below is the list of information for each course, please reach out to the instructor if you need more information.

AP English Literature (12th grade - Mrs. Davis)

Hello students,

Due to the unprecedented circumstances this year, the summer work requirement for AP English IV Literature is for you to read The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James. Copies of the novel are available via Amazon for $6, Kindle downloads are available for $.99, & there are free online versions that are accessible. Having a hard copy to bring with you to class is the best option.

You will need to have thoroughly read the novel by the time we return to school. Be knowledgeable enough to discuss elements such as plot, character, mood, theme, & symbolism in front of the class. You will test over the novel the first week we return to school. The test will consist of multiple choice, matching, vocabulary, & a writing component. A vocabulary list will be given to you on the first day of school to help you prepare. However, as you read this summer, make a list of words with which you are unfamiliar, & write their definitions. This will help you prepare for the vocabulary portion of the test.

You will be completing work that is normally "summer work" during our first few weeks back at school. You will need to have a motivated attitude & a strong work ethic, which are requirements for English IV Advanced Placement Literature. A thorough reading & understanding of The Turn of the Screw will serve you well, upon your return.

If you decide not to remain in my AP class, or if you are taking Comp I & II in place of it, make certain that you contact Mrs. Trent BEFORE August. Do not wait until school begins to change your schedule to regular English IV, or concurrent. You are receiving this email because you are on Mrs. Trent's list as a student enrolled in my AP English IV Literature class. If this is incorrect, contact her very soon.

Please pass this information along to your classmates who may not regularly check their email.

I am looking forward to a fantastic academic year, beginning in August. Stay safe & healthy this summer.
