Members of the RJMS book club, H3 Time Travelers spent June 6-10 visiting historical and educational sites in Vicksburg, MS and New Orleans, LA. The club, which was founded last year, requires members to read historical fiction novels set mainly in the United States throughout various time periods. Along with reading, students meet once a month for book discussions and have to pass a test over each title.

Through the course of their trip, the students visited several sites that correlated with the subject matter dealt with in their required reading. These sites included a battlefield, plantation homes, and a World War II museum.
Earlier in the year, the students visited the Ft. Smith, AR National Historic Site where the “Hanging Judge” Isaac Parker resided. That trip correlated with a book the students read entitled The Legend of Bass Reeves which focused on an African-American U.S. Marshall operating in the Oklahoma Territory.
In addition to their reading requirements, students also engaged in fundraisers to help pay for their trips.
The book club already has many students signed up to begin a great new year of reading fun and adventure with plans to raise funds to embark on their second annual historical trip in the summer of 2012!
