Please congratulate your Savage A-Team on their excellent finish as Regional Runners-Up this weekend, completing some outstanding comebacks to beat Hugo and Eufala, but then falling just short of its second Consecutive Regional Championship in a solid showing from Poteau.
The day began with a first round bye, as the A-Team came in with the first seed from being the top team in previous play. This was fortunate as it allowed lead-scorer Logan Smith enough time to travel from 2nd Round All-State Choir auditions in Edmond to Stigler to provide valuable assistance to the A-Team. It cannot be said enough what dedication and sacrifice this took, not only on Logan’s part, but on the part of his mother, Mrs. Cheryl Smith, who sacrificed her time and stamina to drive Logan from Broken Bow to Edmond, from Edmond to Stigler, and then from Stigler back to Broken Bow. As coach, I am truly grateful of this act. And, as friend, I am honored.
Enough with the mushy mush, back to the dominating: Logan’s arrival sparked a solid showing in the second half after a slow first half, during which Hugo was neck and neck with the A-Team. The A-Team would go on to win the first game by a score of 180-80. This resulted in the matchup against a strong Eufala team. After the first half, Eufala lead by an impressive score of 140-90. At halftime, Eagletown transfer Caleb Wilson was subbed in to the game and provided excellent assistance, scoring 20 crucial points that proved to be the game-winners, as the A-Team topped Eufala 170-150, advancing to the Final Round.
The Final game pitted the Savage A-Team against the Poteau Pirates who bested the A-Team by a convincing score of 260-110. This resulted in the A-Team’s Runner-Up position to the Regional Champion Poteau Pirates.
With this success, however, the Savage A-Team advances to the Area tournament in January, at which the top teams will advance to State. The A-Team would also like to thank Mrs. Shellye Copeland, who joined us in battling the winding roads of N259 on the way to Stigler, and who supported the team with her presence every step of the way.
While the next tournament isn’t until January, the team may look into competing in non-OSSAA sanctioned events, such as NAQT, so it may win a chance to compete at Nationals in New Orleans, LA. Thank you all for your support! Savage A-Team is State-Bound!
Sincerely,
Karl S. Safe
